Anderson‘s game-winner lifts Independence girls basketball past Ardrey Kell

Charlotte, N.C. — Independence forward Ayanna Anderson scored the game-winning basket in the closing seconds of Tuesday‘s non-conference game with Ardrey Kell. Anderson’s layup gave the Patriots their second straight road victory on the season, 44-43.

Both teams went back and forth early. Independence would take the slight 16-13 edge going into the second quarter.

Ardrey Kell‘s offense surged in the second quarter, thanks to the joint effort of Evan Miller and Trinity Palmer. The two Knights helped their team to an impressive 14-3 run that gave the Knights a 27-19 lead at halftime.

However, the momentum would quickly start to shift in the second half.

Independence stormed back in the third quarter with a 16-6 run, thanks to Trinity Thompson. The Patriots‘ guard stole the show late in the third quarter, scoring three straight baskets off of forced turnovers. Thompson‘s hustle and scoring touch gave Independence a 35-33 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Independence would hang on in the final seconds of the fourth quarter with a late game-winning layup by Anderson.

Ardrey Kell (3-3) will look to bounce back this Friday at home against Marvin Ridge. Independence (4-1) will try to stay in the win column as it takes on East Lincoln on Monday.
