Girls Basketball: No. 9 Wakefield edges No. 8 Leesville Road, 41-40

Raleigh, N.C. — The No. 9 Wakefield Wolverines held off a rally by the No. 8 Leesville Road Pride to emerge victorious in a high-powered non-conference game on Tuesday night.

A two-point bucket by junior guard Katelyn Buggs with under a minute to play gave the Wolverines a 41-40 lead that they would be able to preserve despite the Pride getting the ball twice in the ensuing moments.

The level of drama and intrigue that the finish provided did not seem imminent for most of the game, as Wakefield was modestly but clearly in control of the contest throughout the night.

Eight first-quarter points by Elise Williams gave the Wolverines a 14-10 lead through the first eight minutes.

That lead grew in the second quarter as the Wakefield defense held Leesville Road to just nine points in the second quarter.

With a 26-19 lead headed into the halftime break, Wakefield looked poised to ride its strong defense to its fourth win of the season with relative ease.

But the Pride came out strong on offense in the third quarter led by as five different players hit the scoresheet and Leesville Road turned the tables with some strong defense that limited the Wolverines to just eight points in the quarter.

The Pride got within a point late in the quarter, but a late basket allowed Wakefield to take a three-point lead into the fourth.

Wakefield slowed the game down with a two-point lead with about four minutes to go, but Leesville Road battled back anyway.

A three-pointer by Nia Young with just over a minute left gave the Pride a 40-39 lead.

But the Wolverines got back a missed shot on their next possession, got the ball back out to Buggs by the perimeter, and she made no mistake on the opportunity.

Leesville Road missed a shot on its ensuing possession, and even got the ball back for another, but the Pride were unable to get a shot off before time expired.

Wiliams led Wakefield and all scorers with 21 points, while Young paced the Pride with 19 points.

Wakefield will look to keep the ball rolling in its next game on Friday at home against Northwood.

Leesville Road will try to get back into the win column on Thursday at Garner.
