A few Twitter users suggested we should all ‘channel Princess Anne today’ while another said it was definitely a ‘sorry, not sorry moment.’

The reception was held on Tuesday night ahead of the main Nato summit today in Watford.

The meeting comes as the military alliance marks its 70th anniversary but has been plagued by divisions over member state Turkey’s incursion against the Kurds in northern Syria.

While Princess Anne may not have wanted to be among the line-up greeting Trump, she did maintain a diplomatic silence when other leaders started to gossip about him.

The royal was standing near British Prime Minister Boris Johnson, Canadian leader Justin Trudeau and French President Emmanuel Macron as they discussed the US leader.

Trump’s name was not mentioned explicitly but a video caught leaders complaining about someone who gave a long, impromptu speech.

Johnson can be heard saying to Macron ‘Is that why you were late?’

Trudeau intervenes, saying: ‘He was late because he takes a 40-minute press conference off the top!’.

Macron – who is involved in a spat with Trump after the French leader said Nato was ‘brain dead’ – can then be seen gesturing animatedly.

Soon after Trudeau goes on to say: ‘You just watched his team’s jaws drop to the floor.’
